Shimabara has long been called the "city of water" Shimabara has long been called the "city of water", with water gushing out from everywhere in the city.

Shimabara has been recognized for its excellent results in urban development that utilizes water, and was designated as a ``Water Village'' by the National Land Agency in 1995.

Furthermore, in 1985, the Environment Agency selected Shimabara Springs as one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters.

The reason for its selection is that ``spring water used for daily life can be found in various parts of the city, and the waterfront environment has been maintained with the preservation of old waterways.''

It is said that around 200 years ago, the mountain collapsed due to volcanic activity on Mt. Fugen, and the crustal deformation that occurred at that time caused cracks in the ground, causing water to gush out.

In addition to providing a great deal of benefits to citizens as daily water, it has also become a valuable tourist resource that supports the ``City of Water,'' and is gaining recognition.
